A lovely year of finishes – January goal-setting

For the last few days I've been cleaning out and rearranging cupboards since I've had some new ones installed. After coming across several UFOs (unfinished objects) I'd forgotten about, I started to make a list to see how many there were and whether I could make a goal of finishing most of them this year. The list has about a dozen projects on it, which was a little daunting.

Then the other night while I was pootling around the internet I came across this fantastic idea – a lovely year of finishes! It's being hosted by Melissa of Sew Bittersweet Designs and Shanna of Fiber of All Sorts and it's encouraging crafters and craft bloggers to commit to finishing a project every month this year.

The idea is that you set your goal at the beginning of the month, link your blog or pic up to the group linky party, then do an optional mid-month check-in before a final finishes party at the end of each month. You can read more about it by clicking on the 'A Lovely Year of Finishes' button at the bottom of my gadgets column to the right of this post.

Now, sadly for me, the group is really only concentrating on quilting or sewing projects, while my UFOs extend to knitting, crochet and various other assorted crafts, so I'll just dip in and out when I can, but still stick to the monthly goals on this blog – no matter what the project!

At first, my goal for January was going to be finishing the quilt I'm doing for a friend's wedding. It fits with the quilting theme and I've made good progress over the last two days, finishing the large squares and borders for the front. I originally posted the design for this back here.

Then I realised that while I'll be able to finish the top of the quilt, it will still need to be quilted and bound, which just isn't going to happen in January! So, I need another UFO to be my January goal...
That's where this little fella comes in. Can you guess what it is? I have a small group workshop to run early in February and this is what we'll be making. I just need to complete one first to use as the template! Stay tuned for the mid-month check-in where I'll give you more details and some 'how to' instructions.

What's your pile of unfinished objects looking like? Are you tempted to join the lovely year of finishes?

  1. My guess is a coaster.
I think a year of completing UFOs is great. I finished some knitting last year that been hanging around for at least 5 years and had been started as 3 different creations.
I felt so good when it was finally finished and now I've got a beautiful wrap to wear.

  2. Nope, good guess though!
Think of all the new projects I'll be able to start in 2014 too if I finish all my UFOs this year!
