May finishes party – A lovely year of finishes

Does this happen to anyone else? I try not to buy a lot of fabric unless I need it and I'm not really one with a huge fabric stash, but I do find that I collect a lot of leftovers as I make quilts. With the recent house move I realised just how much leftover wadding I was collecting, so I've been on the lookout for a quilt I could make with a quilt-as-you-go method to use up the stash.

It seems though, I'm just in a never-ending cycle of trying to use up leftovers. I really wanted a fine corduroy for the back of this quilt, but when I worked out the amounts I needed for the back, the squares of the quilt didn't fit neatly into the fabric width, so now I'm going to have a ton of corduroy leftover and will have to find another project to use it up! Maybe it's the quilter's circle of life and I should just accept it and go with the flow...

Anyway, back to my goal!
I tried a couple of different options for the quilt front pattern – diagonal stripes or alternating dark and light diamonds, but in the end I decided to go random. Not all the squares will have the same colourway as the test one I did, so I think the random placement will work best. What do you think?

In terms of putting it together, I've looked at a couple of quilt-as-you-go tutorials, but I don't think I'll quite follow any of them. I want to try and make it so the wadding and backing are a quarter of an inch smaller than the front (all around), then quilt the sandwich together, sew the fronts together and then quilt a joining strip between the squares at the back. That probably doesn't make much sense written out, but I'll photograph it as I go and post the results on here. If I never mention this quilt again, you'll know it was a complete disaster ;-)
