Design for design’s sake

Part of the design journey is recognising that not every quilt you design needs to become an actual quilt – that design is a creative process in, and of itself.

Sometimes it might be that the design is too complex or impractical; too similar to something already out there; or one that you don’t feel is good enough to warrant spending considerable time and money bringing to life.

Starting this project had me rearranging all my quilt design files on my computer and realising just how many will never see the light of day… And that’s OK. Some I might revisit, some might spark an idea for another quilt, but many will just be part of the process in honing my craft.

This idea has been reinforced both by Caroline Hadley in her #sundaysketch series and talking to her for my Jan column for Make Modern magazine, but also by Diana Vandeyar in this month’s issue.

Diana pondered whether it’s because new designers worry they’ll run out of ideas, so they feel the need to make every one, when in fact the opposite is true – the more you design, the more ideas you have.

So let’s get to it!

Quilt brief #4

In the spirit of design as play – this next brief is to design a quilt for a child’s bedroom.

Size: Single/twin bed size

Style: Playful, fun and engaging

Colour palette: Bright, bold and vibrant

Don’t forget there is still time to win a copy of Electric Quilt 8 (EQ8) from the Electric Quilt Company by completing Brief #3.

To enter, you need to share a design you’ve made in response to the brief on Instagram with the hashtag #quiltfromabrief and be following both my feed and Electric Quilt’s.

You can enter as many different designs as you like but they need to be on separate posts and your profile will need to be public.

Entries close midnight on 15 March AEDT.

The winner will be chosen from the published designs and announced on my Instagram feed on 16 March. The winner will also be contacted by DM through Instagram.

The competition is open to anyone worldwide.
