Colour inspiration for the Handloomed quilt

One of the joys of making the Handloomed quilt is the endless colour possibilities! Recently, I’ve been getting questions on how to match the khadi fabrics I used in various versions. It’s fun to realise just how many interpretations I’ve created. Since the pattern includes a cushion option, it’s easy for me to try out new colourways in no time.

Khadi alternative

Up until recently a shot cotton was a great alternative to khadi, but with Oakshott’s closure, finding a range with the same breadth of shades is a challenge. So, I’ve created a guide using Kona colours and hex codes to give you some flexibility.

What’s a hex code? It’s a six-digit colour code used in digital design to represent colours on screens. Though it won’t match dyed fabric perfectly, using the Quilty Solid app by Steph Skardal can help (Apple version here, Android version here). Just enter the hex code, and the app will suggest the closest solid fabric shade in your preferred solids line.

Keep in mind, though, that Kona dyelots can vary and a digital colour will never perfectly match a dye, so it’s always a good idea to take your phone along to your local fabric store and match final shades by eye.

The colourways

Below, you’ll find the original colourways for the throw, cushion, and queen-size quilts. The queen-size version was originally worked in Kona, so these ones are an exact match!

The next three showcase the second set of colourways I created. I’ve included a photo of the cushions, and I made some tweaks to improve the balance in the Kona where colours felt too similar in the khadi.

After that are the holiday colourways, and next month I’ll add some fresh combinations I’ve been experimenting with for 2025. Think soothing neutrals with a modern twist.

There’s also a blog post I’ve written to help you choose your owned Handloomed colour palette – you can find that here.

Whether you’re drawn to bold contrasts or subtle tones, I hope these palettes inspire you to dive into making a Handloomed quilt with confidence!
