The Surfacing quilt

She’s finally here! Meet the Surfacing quilt pattern: a curvy, fluid, modern design available in queen, throw, and baby/wallhanging sizes. This quilt was originally designed for my Mum to make use of her stash of ‘A Day in the Country’ shots and stripes, purchased before the beloved Quiltsmith closed its doors.

Designing this one has been quite the journey – finding a fabric range to replicate the original look but in solids was no easy feat. Trust me, tiny stripes and shot cottons make for a tricky sew! Devonstone, an Australian brand of solids, turned out to be the perfect match. The colours, replicated with my handy Cube, come very close to the originals, as you can see in the image below.

More colourways

Of course, I couldn’t resist creating additional colourways! Using Devonstone again, I’ve mocked up three alternate palettes for inspiration. The pattern includes all the swatch names, but I also look forward to seeing what you come up with.

If you’re creating your own palette, I recommend sticking with analogous colourways. The queen size uses 12 foreground colours, so too many hues can get a little chaotic. The throw size, with just 9 colours, offers more flexibility for experimenting with a broader spectrum.

To make planning easy, colouring-in sheets are included in the pattern so you can test out your ideas.

Queen size in the Wine and Bubbly colourway.

Wine throw with light or dark background.

Queen size in the Ocean Swim colourway.

Ocean throw with light or dark background. The left hand quilt uses ‘Unripe’ in place of ‘Green Zebra’ for some extra zing (see pattern for details).

Queen size in the Purple Rain colourway using Jacaranda (see pattern for details).

Throw and baby/wallhanging quilt at scale, showing different shape for the baby/wallhanging. If a similar approach was taken on the throw quilt (ie adding length at the top) it would make a twin/single size quilt.

Queen size quilt in the Outback Mirage colourway (the throw breakdown is supplied in the pattern).

Michele, from MishMash Quilts, has you covered with the full range of Devonstones and has kits in all four Surfacing colourways for the queen and throw sizes. She’s based in Australia, but will quote shipping overseas and the exchange rate in your favour right now, if you’re not based here.

Sign up for my newsletter here to join the Surfacing slowalong in the new year and create your own curvy masterpiece! Whether you're using one of Michele's kits or designing your own colourway, I can’t wait to see how you bring this pattern to life.
